Or it could help us win it? Player-trading is the model we have to follow outwith guaranteed long runs in Europe so identifying the best time to sell (and buy) players is crucial. For example, it's not ideal we allowed Goldson's contract to run down but we felt it was worth it to get what seemed like one good final year out of him. Do we do the same with Aribo and Kent to name just two? I'd argue that occasionally it's worth it but not every time. With regard to Bassey it could be argued his stock will never be higher. MotM performances in the EL final and the Scottish Cup final at the culmination of a fine breakthrough season has everyone talking about him. So, do we sell now at the peak of such discussion or take the risk he can improve further and any fee with that? For example, let's say Chelsea offer £25m tomorrow. That's a lot of money for a lad we basically got for peanuts. Let's say half of it can go to the budget for more new players and half towards allowing us to break even next summer and take the pressure of our Euro campaign. I'd say that's good business and whilst replacing him wouldn't be easy, well we can't have the same players forever. I'd guess that depending on our targets we may spend around £10m this summer on new players. We could double that budget in a stroke by the sale of Bassey which could put us in a stronger position. No-one knows the future of course but we have to realise selling players is just as vital as buying them more than ever.9 points

We've done that with Morelos multiple times. 🤣4 points

As I posted the other day, it's all about context. Shelbourne were/are a part-time team and we were always going to finish that game the stronger. Two penalties also helped and it was the new manager's first game. It was also the start of a new season and a new era with a side full of new players. The Hibs game was markedly different. Gerrard had just left, we'd conceded a penalty for one of the Hibs goals and we were all over the shop at the back. Our incoming new manager was in the stand as opposed to the dug out. It was late November and we'd turned in some poor performances already that season. We were there for the taking... Again, I think Goldson's comments were still ill-advised but, in the context of that game, I can see why confidence was low that we could turn it around. Now, if we were 0-3 down against Dunfermline in our first League Cup tie of last season in August and the lad had said that I'd have been much more concerned. As much as football players are paid a lot of money (far too much in some cases) to play a game of sport, that doesn't mean they're infallible either mentally or physically. Mistakes happen on and off the pitch so I'd treat these comments as an error made in the heat of the moment and I'd interpret them in that Goldson felt that game was gone that one time NOT that any deficit in another game couldn't be clawed back. There is a fairly clear difference there...4 points

Has Gareth Bale found a club yet? What about sticking him up front for 6 months to get him ready for the World Cup? We've got golf courses.3 points

I am highly in favour of selling Bassey now. We get so caught up in a player's form. We go from 'he's worth £25M but he's too important to be sold' to 'he's p*sh - we'll not make our money back on him' when they have a couple of poor games. When their value peaks, sell them! Bassey's value will never be higher than this.3 points

Don't shoot the messenger..... Anyway, who's up for a wee song? Du Du Du Du , Du Du Du , Du Du Du, Du Du Duuuuuuu ……. Glasgow Rangers !! 😏😀2 points

Nice reading but we are Rangers not Glasgow Rangers.2 points

he is the obvious answer to our right wing woes. Bring him home. 1 year membership to Barshaw park will get him in the bag.2 points

I think we know far too little about the club's current finances or forward plans to reach conclusions about how much can be spent.2 points

Will that not leave us exposed in defence?2 points

I think Bassey is going to be a CB, going forward. So, a new LB signing would be useful.2 points

I thought i quote posted this last week but seems i never (too much alcohol or old age) - but reading that now looks like its a dig at Gerrard and co. Read Similar quotes from Arfield since and it resonates.2 points

Quite an incredible achievement. Auchinleck Talbot winning the Junior Cup for the 14th time in their history, with their nearest challengers sitting on 5. Hopefully they will find a way for this old trophy to maintain relevance, beautiful trophy which one can see struggle to continue with the pyramid system being foisted upon clubs going forward. Been competed for since 1886 - would be a travesty to see it lost to modernisation of the game. Fourteen times for Talbot, unbelievable achievement. I was at 5 of the first 6 Cup finals (1st win was in 1949 before my time, but was there in 1986, 1987, 1988, 1991 and 1992). Left UK in 2000, Talbot lost the 2002 final to Linlithgow, then went on to win it 8 times in the next 15 competitions between 2005 and last weekend (and beaten twice in the final in that period too). What a club.1 point

Even just the 2-1 game at Ibrox would have been enough had we converted the 2 stonewall penalties we should have got.1 point

What makes our ranking incredible on that chart is that the progres debacle is included i believe.1 point

Wales will be there, and Scotland won't. You might think that this, and the fact that Wales, a Principality of c3.17 million, whose national sport is rugby, overturned a Ukrainian team which comprehensively out thought and out played the Scottish National XI, would give the SFA, and its manager, pause for some thought. It won't, of course. Not even the huge loss of revenue caused by this latest failure is likely to do so. Being short changed seems to be acceptable, to the SFA, to the media, various, and to the betartaned baw-faced Rangers-hating nationalists who seem to comprise the majority of the support. Next up, for Clarke, is apparently, Armenia, ranked 92nd in the world by FIFA, (Scotland is 39th) ,in a double header, in a 'competition' the meaning of which eludes me, save as a means to put more fitba' on the box, as if that was needed. A gimme, surely? (The population of Scotland is, well, we don't know, but it was estimated at 5.45 million in 2019.)1 point

I very much doubt we would reinvest the full amount into player recruitment, although that might depend on other sales. We saw plenty of Bears expecting the club to spend the full £12m we got for Patterson but that didn't happen. We're running at a loss and need to recoup more than we spend on players.1 point

The above figure was the fee Spurs laid out for the wonderful Jimmy Greaves now we have players going for 100 million and don’t forget all the add ons a huge wage packet another huge fee to an agent ,image rights to name but a few . When is this madness going to end or will it ever end1 point

He went to Milan 6 months earlier for 80,000 (excluding the 15,000 signing bonus that went straight into his pocket). Tottenham overpaid.1 point

Not if you get to reinvest 25 million. That would be league winning almost certainly1 point

My own opinion is 25milion is low in football terms if he’s sold make sure there’s at least another 10 million on that figure1 point

I reckon we'll be looking at 2-3 big player sales over the Summer. Aribo, Bassey and Kamara are likely candidates.1 point

We have been linked with Stoke left back Josh Tymon, English 23 y/o. Approx 5 million. Can only see this happening if we sell Bassey. Numerous outlets running the story but main link from the sun here if interested: link here1 point

@Bill as you are acquainted with the region, can you settle an argument for me. I've been told that people in that region do not like the Flintstones cartoon but I thought that those in Abu Dhabi do.1 point

"certain supporters"? I took myself to a bar one hundred metres from the River Ebro, the cooling breeze lifting off the flow was most welcome in a hot Zaragoza night. Scotland's performance was woeful, we deservedly lost 1-3 to Ukraine. As is normal in most Spanish cities, the local Argentine ex-pats were sounding off wildly, they had just stuffed Italy 0-3 in their own midden. Zaragoza is on one of the official Camino routes and, a couple of fellow middle aged Scots alighted from their bicycles to take in the game. As Ukraine went one up, they were in the midst of telling me their scallop shells on said bikes were from the Isle of Barra. Further, Nicola was attending Hampden. PQ Ganghuttery quickly descended into PQ Shithousery. Tom Anguish, Pat Nevin, Michael Stewart, .......... et al determined someone was to blame for our abject performance and, it was NOT Steve Clarke. Now, we know Nationalism demands blame be attributed to the Rangers player(s) or the Anglos on occasion. Oh, Ryan Jack withdrew from the squad injured and, Souttar was stuck on the bench. Kieran and Andy are the right type of Anglos. Shoehorn in the demonised and marginalised supporter grouping who do not subscribe to the Brigadoon constantly presented by the Tartan Army. Michael Stewart snapped : "I see certain supporters are talking about a Kilmarnock style manager. total Garbage. Yes there were mistakes made tonight But Steve Clarke is a top drawer manager and even they don't get everything right". Michael did relent and get after Scott Mctominay -"no natural defensive instincts and to blame for the second goal". I note the Scottish press commented long and hard on travel arrangements for the game. Michael did NOT contribute. Extra train services were organised to take the Tartan Army home. Although if you had an island destination, you would have settle for the comfort of a cardboard funnel. Nicola has one of those 28 Chauffeur driven Scottish Government cars. She has the one with the really BIG boot, it has to accommodate £20 million ring fenced monies put aside for a second Independence referendum or, as Nicola said on Monday, "it's a good investment". Why didn't Nicola just fly home on her Broomstick? It is like asking Michael to define, "certain supporters", you will not receive an answer?1 point

Hi Mate. Thats touching. Good stuff. I came on after and standby my comment Ramsay is a waste. I have NEVER rated him and I am baffled to him in general. You know I have a soft spot for Arsenal and he did nothing there - Wengers worst signing. Juve couldnt wait to get rid.1 point
