Sitting here looking at some of the comments of our former manager onsocial media and these mugs should be ashamed to call themselves Rangers fans in my opinion they are no better than the mob across the city . I wonder if any of these guys got offered a job at a much bigger salary would they knock it back .10 points

I don’t think it’s strange at all. He achieved his ultimate goal here and it has led to an opportunity to manage a big club in the biggest league in the world, near his family. If he turns that down the perception down south would be that he is a coward, lacks ambition and is cozy in Scotland beating the likes of St Mirren every week. We also just don’t know a lot. People are stating a lot of things as fact (ironically things they have picked up from the press who they claim not to trust every other day of the year) and we just don’t know what has actually happened. I don’t get the “betrayed” thing at all. In fact it comes across as incredibly naive and childish.6 points

This seems to be the only corner of the internet where the prevailing opinion isn’t that Gerrard is a rat/snake. Gersnet is clearly the place to be when the going gets tough.5 points

There's a fair chance Gerrard will never manage Liverpool.4 points

Looks like the Gerrard era at RFC has come to an end. It's been a roller coaster three years and there's no doubt he leaves us in a better place. For that he and his backroom staff have my thanks. We must now move on immediately and I'm hoping a new manager will be in place asap. Of course the timing is far from ideal - both with regard to Walter's passing and our upcoming schedule on the pitch. Like most fans, that disappoints me but it's also football and it's vital we move forward immediately and see this as an opportunity to improve. To be honest, I think this has been coming for a while and may explain some of the negativity we've seen this season on the pitch. As such, the board/Ross Wilson should be well prepared for where we are and ready to put our next plan into action. A new era awaits!4 points

This. I'll love him for the rest of my life for what he's done: The title was superb and those European nights will live long in the memory. I wish him well.4 points

Except me! whatever way you want to paint it for me he jumped ship! sneaking away like that! he has left us in the shit and taking the whole backroom staff with him, regardless who steps in to replace him, I get the impression a lot of posters on here are quite happy he has left!. We all knew he would leave at some point, no problem with that at all, but it was only a week or so ago that he was smiling saying do I look happy? do I look settled? slimy!!. The decent thing to do would be finish the season, I don't need to hear ''He couldn't turn down the Aston Villa job'', yes he could and should have IMO! which makes me believe something has happened behind the scenes?. I believe he has made Separate Entity FC favourites for the title now!.3 points

Now that he's gone I expect it won't be long before the dam breaks and the gossip starts flying about why Gerrard chose to leave and what had been the situation behind closed doors. Clearly, everything hasn't been sweetness and light for some time. Did he have an issue with Wilson, with the board in general, was it transfer funds, or an inability to get the response he wanted from the players. Personally I think he was becoming deeply frustrated by the attitude of his team on the park and couldn't change whatever was behind it. That and a lack of transfer funds.3 points

That would be so short-sighted and a backwards step of the club. Utterly depressing if we did something like that, we've come so far in the last few years.3 points

Gutted with the timing of this but tbh not surprised. Gerrard has not looked happy for most of this season. The team has struggled and at times it looked like they couldn't improve things. Maybe based on this season's budget he had gone as far as he could with this group of players. As far as the team goes I have major concerns we will see them implode if we don't act quickly and decisively. No interim nonsense. Perhaps in time I will get over the disappointment and wish him well but not today. Sorry, that's how I feel.3 points

I'm fairly neutral on Gerrard. I don't agree with people hoping he fails at Villa but at the same time, have no real interest in his future career. All that matters is Rangers.3 points

I'm excited for a change, but I wouldn't say I'm wishing it. Quite frankly, on current form, I don't see us doing anything. We're just limping along with really difficult away fixtures in December. Goldson is leaving anyway, and he's been absolutely abysmal this season. Tavernier won't be going anywhere; he was here before SG and he'll be here after. Kent could go, but if we're getting £15M+ for him then... great! The pessimism around this has really surprised me, to be honest.3 points

Lille offered us £16.5m and we turned it down. I said on here that day that we better have a plan if we’re turning that down but we didn’t and they walked away and we won’t get anything like that for him now.2 points

I found these contrasting posts interesting. I certainly favour the latter. Why would we alienate ourselves from Villa? For me it is not about demanding silly money. It is about achieving fair market price for our player(s). Surely if Gerrard is interested in taking any of our players he knows the market price and Villa will have to stump up. Contrast that to Everton's approach for Pattison? As the post above states, we need to sell soon to help balance the books. It's a no brainer. There seems to be a lot congeniality on both sides with this. The club did not try to block it and I assume the board found the compensation package acceptable? We need to use it to our advantage. Villa must have a huge, expensive 1st team squad. Loan deals or makeweight player exchanges perhaps? Cannot see any benefit of snubbing Villa if they want to do business.2 points

Maybe, but think Tav tweeting was correct thing to do as Captain. Was a classy message as you would expect following on from the clubs "thanks". Closed now as far as I am concerned.2 points

I can understand why people are bitter about the manner of the departure. Players and managers come and go*, there'll always be Rangers. One of our greatest ever managers left and promptly went to Leicester City (I wasn't around but understand he wasn't happy about transfer funds - perhaps not entirely dissimilar to Gerrard but Wallace was a Rangers man).2 points

No, he’s just expressing what he feels. Apparently it’s still legal to do so2 points

I also didn’t like the way he left without a word, although how he would communicate with us while negotiating a new job is hard to imagine. I’m glad he was our manager but I was becoming more and more convinced he’d run his course - so I won’t be losing sleep over his leaving.2 points
-
Villa job’s available. That’s what’s changed. He might have gone to ‘Spurs if he had been invited. I doubt he would ever have gone to Norwich, Watford or the like.2 points

They are totally incapable of understanding reality and think that professional footballers and managers should not make decisions which they conceive to be in their best interest but should instead only seek to get the approval of the most narrow minded section of the fan-base.2 points

What about Knutsen of Bodo Glimt? Looks like he’s done an incredible job.2 points

No mention of two real Rangers men yet? Maybe it is time for the dream team of Kenny Miller and Lee Wallace. Both know the club inside out.2 points

They weren't really a basket case at all, it was Lampard, IMO: Tuchel has come in and transformed them with the same squad Lampard had.2 points
-
The latest accounts show we need to trim our squad a bit and also that selling a player or two can massively transform our annual position, so if he was to offer reasonable money it could be a good move for all concerned.2 points

I don’t know what to think of GVB. Potential obviously but less pedigree and experience than I would like. At this point in the season though are there any better options out there? Compensation will play a part too. GVB is available so that goes in his favour.2 points
-
Bruce or Warnock? That would be a massive step backwards IMO. Dinosaurs of the game and not what we should be looking to do given what we have in place on and off the field now. I still think this has been in the offing for a while which might explain a lot about this season. And SG can't moan about the budget as our failure to qualify for the CL has dictated available funds.2 points

Honestly, I'd be absolutely delighted if he's appointed. The right mix of knowledge of our club and the Scottish game + global pull, I think he would be an exceptional appointment actually.2 points

I think Gio looks to be the most likely replacement at this stage.2 points

The strength of character thing resonates with me. We know the media landscape in Scotland, it's mostly toxic. I think we need a management team that know the score, know the job and, don't panic at the level of expectation. I contributed earlier in this thread about how I was wrong when Walter was appointed. After the sexiness of the Souness years, it was hard to reconcile with a local born and bred lad. Walter and Archie Knox had plenty of inner toughness or if you prefer, 'strength of character'. It may not tick every Gersnetter's box but I would go with Kevin Thomson and Neil McCann?2 points

Just glad it hasn't dragged on. Now we can focus on what actually matters - our next manager. Whoever it is, the one thing I hope they bring is strength of character, we've seen enough managers and players melt under the pressure this club brings.2 points

The comments with regards to Villa by so many has been absolutely bizarre tbh. A big club, in huge city, very near his family (can he even commute?). A rare opportunity for him.2 points

The Epl is the richest league, is it the best? Im not so sure. Gerrard in my eyes is making a huge mistake and i fully expect him to end up in the second teir of English football by the end of the season. I was starting to question wether our current crop of players had run their course under Gerrard given our performances this season so it may be no bad thing he moves on. But im not happy at the lack of information coming from the club .2 points

Maybe now we will win a cup or two, onwards and upwards I wish Gerrard well but no man is bigger than the club2 points

He stopped 10IAR. For that alone I’ll always be grateful to SG.2 points

It was 3 weeks ago and it was in relation to the Newcastle job. He answered the question honestly at that time and dealt with the press the way he should deal with them when they are asking questions like that. The Villa offer came in weeks after that and just because he took it it doesn’t mean he was dishonest on October 21st. I can understand Celtic fans being all over that but I find it weird the way Rangers fans are going on about it.1 point

Given what we’ve seen this season, what we’ve got isn’t good enough to take us forward - either that or Gerrard couldn’t get the best out of them. It’s more that a new manager we need and a few squad changes are inevitable over the next couple of windows.1 point

Mentioned Knutsen in the New manager thread. Also looks like he won't be getting the Norwich job.1 point

Our ship under him took a while to find its course, had to navigate a fair amount of dire straits along the way till it reached its first nautical milestone. We are on our way to the next milestone and - as it stands - the bridge crew and engineering has jumped ship ... and only the nautical officer is there and needs to plot a new course through a fog bank that just appeared straight ahead. Remember that scene in 13th Warrior, where one viking shoots a burning arrow into the fog and leader calls out for Ooooodiiiiin ... awaiting an echo.1 point

Brighton, Palace, Southampton, Norwich, Watford, Brentford, even Leicester. Some are above Villa in the table currently but together they don’t have Villa’s potential. Fair to say, though, that some notable managers have failed to unleash that potential.1 point

I'm not against GVB, but as I said elsewhere, I still have a sneaky suspicion that he's another DeBoer: good in the Dutch League with a big team, but will fail everywhere else. The arguments against that is that he did have a prolonged spell of success not at the two biggest sides (Ajax and PSV), and has been studying with Pep at City Group. He's also not actually been tested outside of the Netherlands, so it would be unfair to write him off.1 point
