  1. A few years ago in Lambhill Cemetery in Glasgow we managed to locate the final resting place of Rangers President George Goudie, unfortunately the stone marking the plot was off it’s plinth.Subsequently our team re-erected the stone and blast cleaned it. As a token of our gratitude, thanks and respect we at the Restoration of Rangers Graves Project thought that it would be fitting to mark Mr Goudies plot with a plaque, this was put in place last week. This is today’s generation of Rangers supporters saying thank you to Mr George Goudie. President 1882 – 1883 - Vice President 1883 – 1885. George Goudie was a Paisley “Buddie”, born at 2, Hamilton Street in the town on 9 April, 1859 to Humphrey, an engine-fitter (although later records would state he was a marine engineer), and his wife Anne. It would appear young George spent his formative years overseas. There is no trace of the family in the census of 1861 or in that of 1871. They do appear in the 1881 census. By then the family home was at 14 Union Street in Leith. The census records twenty-one year-old George had three siblings. Eighteen year-old Matthew and sixteen year-old William had been born in Greece. The youngest of the four sons, fourteen year-old Henry, had been born in Turkey. George’s occupation was given as “clerk”. Research has, as yet, failed to reveal how the young clerk from Leith became, within a year, vice-president of Rangers Football Club! Goudie’s first appearance in the Glasgow PO directory was not until 1886/87. We do know, though, that he was an accomplished athlete, being successful at distances ranging from 100 yards to 880 yards. It is not an unfair assumption that George became friends with Tom Vallace on the athletics circuit and he was brought into the Rangers’ circle through Tom. When Archie Harkness died so tragically young in November, 1882, Vice-president George Goudie assumed the presidency of the club. These were not good times for the Rangers. There had been no attempt to build up the club membership. The club was in such financial straits, the committee approached President Goudie requesting he provide a loan of £30 (just under £3,000 in today’s terms). This he did. Would Rangers Football Club have survived if Goudie had not agreed to provide the loan? We have to assume that without it, the end may have been nigh. By the summer of 1883, the club was £100 in debt. George served just a matter of months as president. He stood down at the annual general meeting in May, 1883, held at the Athole Hotel. Tom Vallance became president. George served as his vice-president for the next two years. The fact the committee felt they could approach George Goudie for a loan would suggest he had already established his business as a produce merchant with some success. George married Jane Currie on 14 April, 1887 at her family home at 20 Kelvingrove Street. George had been living at 89 Grant Street, a short distance from Rangers’ old Burnbank ground. The first marital home would appear to have been at Sandyford Street. By 1891, the family, now augmented by George, Jnr had moved to 20 Kelvingrove Street. George had had offices in Waterloo Street and York Street. Such was the success of his business, the family could afford to employ a domestic servant. By the time of the 1901 census, George, Jnr had been joined by sister Jane and brothers Alexander and James. Five years later, the Goudies had moved to Pollokshields, the family home being “Dunard” at 14 Leslie Street. George had retained his sporting competitive spirit, turning his hand to bowls. He had been a member of the St Vincent Club, then, on moving south of the river, Titwood Bowling Club. His final business address was in Howard Street. George suffered from heart disease for the last eighteen months or so of his life. He died, aged only fifty-one, on 24 February, 1911. His funeral took place at the Western Necropolis, attended by his “wide circle of friends”. The funeral directors were James Henderson and Co. Yes, the same James Henderson who, too, became president of Rangers and at the time of George’s death, was chairman of Rangers Football Club Limited. We do not have a great record of George Goudie’s time on the Rangers committee. That one act, however, the granting of a loan of £30, will ensure his place in our history will live for ever.

  2. Frankie, Eamonn Donohoe is the Producer of Sportscene, I do not know if the mother and child in Sellik strips during the opening credits are his wife and son. I know he has a wife and young son. Donohoe has been at PQ since 2012/13, arrived as a Reporter/Producer from RTE. He was given an elevated role in BBC Scotland's coverage of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in 2014. There has been a change in coverage of Rangers and Rangers supporters this season, anything positive like yesterday's result and performance is played with a gritted teeth straight bat. Anything negative or anything where a negative perception can be utilised ie last week's Killie celebrations, then everybody on message piles in to administer a good kicking. There is already a lack of professionalism reference content and that is the show's Producer's remit. Last week's Green Brigade banner reference, 'Fen-ian Army' and Saturday's sectarian chanting at Fir Park have been deliberately ignored. Jonathon Sutherland is ambitious and is willing to point the finger at us, he knows such conduct has led to PQ promotions in the past. Another change is the coverage of Sellik's CL assault. The guy who wants the Producer of Sportscene gig next, is Martin Dowden. He has spent the last two decades climbing both BBC Scotland ladders of reporting and production. These last couple of years he was assigned BBC North East and has pushed on Tyrone Smith. Annie McGuire was always anxious to enhance Dowden's PQ credentials, "he's a really good Sellik man". This season, Dowden has traveled with Pat Bonner to Sarajevo, Estonia, and Romania. If Sellik survive to the CL group stages, the budget will be increased to facilitate Dowden, Bonner, and Tom English. There are already voices inside PQ noting the continuing rise in the Irish colony. I think we should hear voices from all over the British Isles, but it's becoming noted there is a distinct lack of Welsh, and English regional accents being broadcast. I have heard there was seething rage at last week's Rangers supporting blogger pulling out, claiming he was duped. It reminds me of a dozen years past with the RST's David Edgar. An arranged tete-a-tete with Spiers and Edgar in the studio was deliberately pulled forward. Edgar was in central station, constant tannoy announcements running interference, the rush hour, ....etc. Spiers sat in the studio and took advantage. The PQ/Rangers relationship is constantly choreographed and micro managed; Phyllis McLeish will tell you that.

  3. There wasn't really a failure yesterday but for overall influence on the game and rest of the team I go for Ryan Jack. It's no surprise that he's now one of the manager's permanent pillars that the rest of the team is founded on. Defending, critical tackles, ball winning, distribution, attempts on goal, work rate ... it was all there against Hibs. He seems to get better by the week.

  4. For the record, Jones is proving me, and a lot of other fans, wrong. I wasn't overly excited by his signing, he still has a lot to do, but so far so good, I love it when a player proves me wrong by his performances. Must keep up his good start to the season.

  5. If he is going out on loan I would prefer him to stay in the SPL at a side which has at least an outside chance of taking something from the yahoos in the odd game. Like Middleton to hibs.

  6. Katic’s booking was fully deserved. Ojo’s not so much.

  7. It is a lovely pass and a well taken goal, no mistake. But sadly it doesn't count for much if the opposition stick 6 goals past you in reply. Can you see what I've done there? It's called balanced journalism. Any chance you might offer us some anytime soon BBC Scotland?

  8. I don't think there has been any doubt about the quality of Ojo's footballing ability; it's his decision making that's looked the issue for me. Yesterday he looked much sharper, particularly first half, and I think I few other players are stealing his thunder from yesterday's game where he was involved in at least three of the goals.

  9. Liverpool going to be losing Alisson for weeks. That's a bitter blow. He's worth at least as many points to them as McGregor is to us and just like us they could be facing a tight run thing.

  10. sportscene was perfectly fair last night.

  11. Can't argue with that. Hibs could easily have picked up several more bookings had there been consistency.

  12. I'd agree, but he showed inconsistency by not booking a similar challenge on Ojo (?) a few minutes later.

  13. Defoe, Jones and Morelos could have won it. Aribo and Davis were up there too, however Jack is beginning to show that's he's thenguy to make us tick. I've said it before but something has happened in his psyche and it's changed him. I don't know if it's Gerrard giving him confidence, or the coaching team, or just a self triggered thought, but he is absolute class these days. He just acts like a completely different player and I'm loving watching him. I've noticed that he carries himself differently when he comes on the pitch too. It's almost as if he really believes that he's a winner now. It's hard to explain but if you watch him when the teams are lined up you'll see what I mean.

  14. Couldn't agree more. I still think Defoe is one of our most underrated players. He is an oustanding footballer. His first touch, passing and vision are fantastic for a striker. I was delighted to see that he did rotate in because I think those two should be kept fresh as much as possible because as we saw yesterday they are both lethal when they are.

  15. Though we were superb for long periods yesterday and really should have scored more than we did. Only negative was losing a goal out of nothing and allowing that to unsettle us either side of half-time. However, we got going again and with the red card helping went on to deservedly hammer the Hibees. Lots of good individual performances throughout the team. Goldson was again excellent and his range of passing very good whilst Jack was arguably man of the match in midfield with Davis and Aribo falling out of the game at times. In attack Defoe was first class but (rather ironically) wasteful at key moments whilst Jones and Ojo both contributed well throughout their game-time. Morelos and Stewart also looked sharp when they came on. Ultimately, the best positive for me was that it was another fine team performance and some of the football really is great to watch. What I enjoyed most yesterday is that we got our shots away a bit earlier for much of the game and stopped trying to find the perfect goal.

  16. Having read up then it does seem that every country has it's own thing. Holland is 3 goals in one half without another scorer in between. Germany says the perfect Hat-trick is if you score the third in extra time.

  18. Defoe is total class. He brings so much to the rest of the team and really chuffed for him to get his reward today. This is a marker for the rest of the league. We aren't messing around. 6 points from two games that we all thought might be tough openers. Can't argue with that. Keep it up Rangers.

  20. Liverpool bought into the hype and priced him out of a move. I’d have been shocked if someone had shelled out the kind of cash the press were quoting for him.

  21. They're playing him in the under 23's, he's stepping back not moving forward. This isn't beneficial to either the player or Liverpool. They need to get him a team and the solution is obvious. They know what he wants.

  22. Agreed Michael Stewart said at least 3 times that Rangers were winning with 11 against 11 and would have still won easily if Hibs had kept 11.

  23. Ah, c'mon, it was a lovely pass and a decent finish. At 6-1 even I can be magnanimous! It's comedic just how much focus it's got though, I mean had it won them the match or even earned them a point I could just about understand but when it was a consolation during a trouncing you'd think they might have found something else to highlight. But as 26th so ably demonstrates every week, they don't think like we do.

  24. I had hoped he'd be fit by now and in the first team but it looks like it has been too big an ask. Reading between the lines I think he has to go on loan now or he has no chance. A loan to a team like Motherwell or Hamilton could do him wonders, somewhere where he can commute from home and settle in quickly and concentrate on starting games.

  25. The referee had no choice but to book Katic; as obvious a yellow as you'll see. I'm surprised anybody would criticise the ref over that one.

  28. And by the way, if you are going to lose a goal the best way to lose it is to a moment of real quality from the opposition. There is no question that most of the goals we concede in the league are not, but that pass from Scott Allan was world class. He's the definition of a luxury player but I can only admire his passing and vision. I hope Davis has learned his lesson, he was tight to him and then he gave him 5 or 6 yards of space and time to go with it and that was all he needed.

  29. Jack was getting slaughtered at times last season but the quality of player he's playing alongside is so much higher than last season, he must be loving it. Aribo and Davis are both class and he must be really enjoying playing with them. Sorry to the Candeias fanboys but I think it helps to have the movement of Ojo/Arfield in front of him too rather than a sideway pass to the right.

  30. Definitely. It can be intensely frustrating playing in a poor team (offensively) as a forward player because it can make you look rubbish. I myself know even from experience I can look the worst player on the park one week and the best the next week depending on the players around me and their style of play. Jones and Stewart both look like they are going to enjoy their football this season.

  31. Yeah, it's important this season for us to be much less predictable and with so many options in attack, that should be the case as long as people maintain their form. It's easy to be worried about the quality of players when they arrive from perceived lesser teams. However, in my book, these signings are likely to improve alongside better players so they should find it easier to create in some ways.

  32. And by the way that's Ojo now half way to Kent and Candeias's goals total from last season and it's only the 12th of August

  34. FAO @26th of foot A very interesting claim on FF that Eamonn Donohoe is the Sportscene producer and it's his family seen celebrating a Celtic winner over Rangers in the programme's credits...

  35. Lets keep them there. As long as Rangers can keep winning on the pitch and walking off with three points that's all that matters. Sportscene can froth at the mouth all they want but it'll be the points in the bag that will win 55 in the end. Do the job on the pitch Rangers and leave Pacific Quay CSC to wail and gnash their teeth in frustration. I am sure Gerrard knows this and will keep the players focussed on what really needs to be done and where the effort really matters.

  37. Prefer the old way. The euphoric moment of scoring a goal is what it's always been about - now you are always looking at the ref in case he signals to VAR.
