  1. It's nights like this I wish I still drank alcohol. I'm sitting here reflecting on an amazing evening and thinking about the long years of chaos and ridicule, not knowing if we'd ever see this club back on it's feet again. To paraphrase Churchill, I think we reached the end of the beginning tonight. I feel a huge weight has lifted over the last few months and we need to acknowledge the achievement of those running the club today. It looks like being a hell of a ride as this rocket takes off.

  2. I certainly don't think we're the finished article. We don't create enough chances for the possession we have, our decision making in the final third is often poor, we've too few options up front and we're still susceptible to a ball in behind. But last night was what is magical about supporting Rangers. I know Rapid Vienna aren't world beaters, but they're a decent side from a league viewed as being considerably stronger than the one we play in and they've a good support. The fact their players aren't household names adds to the magic for me. It reminds of when I first went to European and International matches and whilst you'd know the name of team you were playing many of their players were a mystery to you. We came back from a goal down, our side wouldn't have done that last season against Motherwell far less Rapid Vienna. We didn't tire, indeed we upped the pace as the match went on, we scored three goals and their keeper pulled off a wonderful save, the stadium was rocking, the players reacted to the disappointment of the weekend and gave us a night to remember. Don't lose sight of what our side is composed of. Last night's starting 11 had a veteran keeper, 4 players on loan from clubs they can't get into the first team of, two defenders whose careers had lost their way for various reasons, a young forward playing in Finnish football 18 months ago, a Portuguese mid-table journeyman, another midfielder deemed not good enough to get picked for the worst Scottish national squad ever and a captain many supporters felt until fairly recently wasn't good enough to play in the SPFL. That was our starting 11 last night. Bloody hell guys enjoy it, if the past has taught us anything it's these nights are not guaranteed.

  3. Not one of them mentioned the word, 'Coefficient'. We endured four years of the second best club in Scotland striving to increase the Scottish coefficient. it was always a tale of heroic failure. It became a lament, even on Saturday last, DrStu' a soulfulsaintee had the blues for Aberdeen's torment at the hands of Burnley. The Dandy Dons attempts to improve the coefficient had as much merit as 'Sell Out Saturday', just as much promotion too. All hail Aberdeen adding another .75 to the total. Of course, they turn down the volume on another Northern Light trait, the continuing feeling of immense well being that fills PQ when their fellow Dandies at ra Stydome sing, 'we hate Rangers more than you'. Pats on the heads all round. Liam McLeod was anxious to flash those particular credentials last night in Salzburg, the commentator said : 'The Scottish champions have lost to Salzburg this evening, when you say Salzburg we must remember they are last year's Europa Cup semi-finalists. Of course, Rangers face Austrian opposition at Ibrox too, Rapid Vienna are a VASTLY inferior level of opposition, finishing eighteen points behind Salzburg last season'. There was no murmur of disagreement from his co-commentator in Austria, Pat Bonner. Chris McLaughlin at pitch side did not offer an alternative either. Back in the studio, Big Dick, Wullie Miller, and Tom English kept stumm too. In fact, Big Dick just had enough time to hand over to a throaty Chic Young to provide the BBC Scotland audience with the Rangers team. As Chico voiced Kent, Morelos kicked-off. As usual, the PQ naughty step was crowded, Chic was joined by both Thommo and his EBT. No live commentary from a screen, just the occasional comment amid the struggle to get comfortable with ra Sellik's failure to add to the Scots coefficient. Comfort landed at PQ, when Wullie Miller said, "Livingston". we had tales of Jum Spence constantly arriving late at Almondvale to report on games, because the plethora of roundabouts, Big Dick only attends that part of West Lothian with the constant aid of SatNav, and Tom English regaled the listenership with the tale of a bus rear-ending him, on his way to Livi'. Wullie was explaining how easy it was to get lost in the town, when Tom intervened with, "just like Rangers". See, if they really try, they can provide build-up to a Euro Rangers game at Ibrox. I turned off my wee DAB radio and watched the match. I was impressed with the Bears organised display of, 'amid all the banners and flags'; strikingly colourful and vibrant. Chico's first comment was, "the Austrians have a banner stating, 'come on you bhoys in green', borrowed from another Glasgow club"? Big Dick laughed and uttered, "I'm sure it is". Chico made no mention of our wonderful display. There was a couple of lines at half time both scorers given, and Big Dick had the courtesy to say Rapid had a player clearly offside in the build up to their goal. I stood and applauded Rangers off the pitch and left the stadium, plugged in my radio and music was playing. In the several minutes it took to leave the ground, BBC Scotland's football coverage had ended and handed over to Travelling Folk. Once again, BBC Scotland take our license fees and fail to convey the excitement of a Scottish club once again adding to the coefficient, deliberately so. We are awkward and inconvenient Scots.

  4. How can anyone criticise Morelos for that performance? He was outstanding last night, he closed down their defenders constantly, he made runs in the channels, he dropped deep to link up play, he tracked back when they broke, he scored two goals and won a penalty. What more do supporters expect from him? I love the Europa League. I know the Champion's League is where all the money is and so most of the attention, but the Europa League is a genuine competition in that almost every side in it could win it. Obviously some are rank outsiders, us included, but it's the kind of competition that's thrown up surprise sides over the years. Rapid Vienna aren't world beaters, but they're decent. Plus they've got a great name. Beating them in that manner was massively enjoyable. That was real cup tie, both teams wanting to win, both teams capable of winning, but the side that wanted it more came out on top. Brilliant night.

  5. Just looked at BBC Scotland's Scottish football Website page. Steven Thomson's claim that Rangers result against Rapid was, "phenomenal" is seventh item. First item is Mulumbu's forecast that ra Sellik will defeat both Hearts and Hibs in coming weeks to return to the top of the table. Third item is Lustig confident of ra Sellik's bouncebackability, and Hearts are second with their confidence to take points at Ibrox. I should add, the word, 'coefficient' is mysteriously absent.

  6. I think a few folk need to calm down. We absolutely dominated in that second half and although we wre wasteful (almost every time we took the wrong option) we played very well and never gave up - the two late goals being the least we deserved. A great win and the players should be proud of themselves. What an atmosphere!!!

  8. It was like the old days up in the Copland rear last night. Brilliant win. For perspective, I just read on FF that 6 years ago today we lost 1-0 to Stirling Albion.

  9. There were a few but the add-ons fairly inaudible to me watching on TV. Annoyingly a drinks container was thrown on at their goalscorer so that may be fined.

  10. That midfield three does work - that was obvious from their second half showing. They just need to maintain a higher intensity and offer more belief like they did in the second half compared to the first. The good news is with Jack, Rossiter and Dorrans all pretty much available now too, we have plenty of options if player A or B doesn't do that.

  11. Exactly. Keeper was pretty much untested until the penalty. And Rapid were without their two best centre backs. So I think there’s a lot of exaggeration there but hopefully it’s deliberate and aimed at boosting morale.

  12. I agree with that. I was hoping stevie g would make a change more quickly. I can’t agree with him that we were outstanding for 90 minutes. I thought we were very good in the second half but not with so much craft when we basically ran them off their feet. However Rapid were a very clever team and quite cynical and at all times I felt (even in the first half) that if we could get a lead we could give them a going over. I think there was a nervousness in the first half as the players worked out Rapid and then Stevie obviously had wise words at half time. Should take a lot of confidence from that and hopefully our players start to learn that they are the 2nd half team in terms of capability.

  13. Everyone I spoke to before the game couldn't understand why Gerrard had picked Worrell in front of Katic, myself included, but Gerrard got it spot on. Worrell and their brute of a forward had a real physical battle in the first half and Worrell handled him really well. I thought Worrell was outstanding tonight.

  14. He was excellent - strong defensively but good on the ball as well. We're lucky to have him, Goldson and Katic.

  15. Agreed, pete. Good show from them, although the repetitive Ultra songs do get a bit tedious. It's a bit crap when you watch German, Spanish, Belgian, British and Italian football and the songs are all the bloody same. Which is why Every Other Saturday, Follow Follow and Derrys Walls should always be sung at Ibrox. It was a great night. It felt a bit like a dream for the last 10 mins of the match and about an hour afterwards. That's what it's all about.

  16. I hope Rapid comes back on and gives his impression of how he got on and what he thought. The Rapid fans certainly added to the atmosphere.

  17. We're getting a bit off topic here. FARE attend our games in order to ensure we behave in a way that suits their yahoo-driven agenda. Their agenda is quite obvious. As soon as we look like winning things again, the usual whining about nasty songs will rear it's head. If it's not TBB, it'll be something else. I'm surprised they haven't whined about us calling King James's rebels 'scum' yet. Surely that's an attack on inclusiveness. FARE can GTF. Bunch of tramps doing BS jobs.

  18. I hope more opposing teams fans bring Irish flags to Ibrox and wave them whilst Rangers stuff them. If we get rid of wind ups and provocation at the football, we may as well go and watch polo or bowls instead. By the way, a few of our fans had Serbia flags when we played Osijek (quite right too, in my opinion), so high horses won't be required.

  19. I agree. But I don’t find it provocative in any way, in fact I think it makes the plastic paddy’s look pathetic as we know them to be. Why would any Rangerd fan find the Irish flag abhorrent?

  22. Second half seen us grow in confidence. A win against hearts and the swagger we have been missing on the park might just flourish. Great result and fantastic to see Ibrox rocking

  23. I thought we were very good at one side of the game and not good at another but a bit of magic from Ejaria was the difference. It's frustrating to be rebuked for mentioning any negatives, told to cheer up and reminded yet again of the League 2 days when you've only made some pretty balanced comments about how you saw the game. Some of us come on here to analyse the game a little bit afterwards and I think others come on primarily to celebrate and that's what causes a bit of friction.

  28. A tad OTT Pete. Everyone is delighted with last night but I still think it's fair to assess the performance in terms of the wider picture and how the team is developing.

  29. I came on here happy and now I feel like slashing my wrists. The most impossible thing in the world must be making Rangers supporters happy. We talk about the media being negative about us. Jesus!

  31. I thought Ejaria was the stand out last night. He's always on the turn and looking to get forward which I like. It doesn't always come off but if you keep knocking at the door you'll get something (the penalty for example). Looking at the bigger picture, my biggest "concern" is how narrow we are and our use of wide players/full backs. If Kent and Candeias (or whoever) are playing in this narrow formation we really need to get our full backs hitting the byline (as Man City utilise so well). I said it another post but I cannot recall any occasions in the last few games where our full backs actually hit the byline and get crosses into the dangers area (back post/6 yard line/penalty spot). If we can crack that Morelos would score a barrel load. Another thing I have noticed, is that there are too many times of late when we have resorted to the hopeful "floaty" ball into the box which drives me friggin crazy. Another bug bear is McGregors distribution. I noticed a few times last night Goldson having a go at the keeper because he was too keen to go long. This was after Goldson making an angle for a pass with no one around him. It's giving up the possession too easily for me. Anyhoo, it was a great win and 2nd half display. Well Done Rangers

  32. It's a pathetic claim, in a report whose sole purpose can only be to strip the gloss from a great night in Govan. I wouldn't call it a "Euro Glory Night", as those, as we know, are the province solely of fhilthfootballclub, but it does deserve a more accurate and less mean spirited account.

  35. The first half was hard work. Our midfield did not know whether to stick or twist. In possession, we were 3-4-3; out of possession, we played 4-1-4-1. The ball inside Flanagan was offside, the resultant pass was a good one, only bettered by the tackle that saw the ball break to Berisha for a simple sweep into the net. I thought we were fcuked, lots of credit for the quickest of replies, a well worked equaliser. The second half was a triumph. Twenty minutes from the end, and several Rapid players were blowing. Ejeria became a torment, good close control and little gives and goes, particularly with Kent. Rapid had racked up deserved cautions too. Morelos cut across the Rapid defender in a fluid move and the Ref' correctly awarded a penalty. Tav' stroked it into the net. The back heel from Candeias was delicious that led to the third. Flanagan was my man of the match, and the atmosphere was outstanding. I think Rapid finished with six players booked, they could not stay with us in the second half.

  38. BTW, I think the manager deserves a lot of credit tonight. Flanagan and Worrall were interesting choices but both were excellent and I thought the manager was also right not to make any subs later in the game as it could have disrupted our momentum. Positive from that is a few players will be fresh for Sunday and we'll need them to be.

  40. I know what you mean with Lafferty, he’s a great finisher and is more likely to take his chances when we’re defending and counter attacking but I think Morelos will be more suited to tonight - he’ll get into more scoring positions when we’re on the front foot, pressing high and will have more chances - whether he takes them or not is another question (and goes back to your point) but I think he’ll be given the nod.
