Tiarna Elizabeth Baughan September 13 at 1:11 AM According to a 19th century legend, the Truth and the Lie meet one day. The Lie says to the Truth: "It's a marvellous day today"! The Truth looks up to the skies and sighs, for the day was really beautiful. They spend a lot of time together, ultimately arriving beside a well. The Lie tells the Truth: "The water is very nice, let's take a bath together!" The Truth, once again suspicious, tests the water and discovers that it indeed is very nice. They undress and start bathing. Suddenly, the Lie comes out of the water, puts on the clothes of the Truth and runs away. The furious Truth comes out of the well and runs everywhere to find the Lie and to get her clothes back. The World, seeing the Truth naked, turns its gaze away, with contempt and rage. The poor Truth returns to the well and disappears forever, hiding therein, its shame. Since then, the Lie travels around the world, dressed as the Truth, satisfying the needs of society, because, the World, in any case, harbours no wish at all to meet the naked Truth. The world famous painting- "The Truth coming out of the well" Jean-Léon Gérôme, 1896.5 points

Their news department certainly carry negative Rangers stories (non sporting) very prominently. Their economic/financial editor (Fraser) has become very sharp tongued when speaking about the club and it's officers.4 points

Robert McElroy's Rangers Historian ran for 25 years, It was a magazine format with over 100 editions. Reference John Allan, he was commissioned to pen the first half of Rangers existence. Allan was more a statistician than a historian, the fly leaf pull out(the Story of the Rangers - Fifty years of football 1873-1923) containing all Rangers competitive results during that period is invaluable. There's the problem with Allan right there, he was late in finishing the book, thus changed our date of founding from 1872 to 1873 to suit his preferred title. Further, he spun a tale of lusty lads and derring do. A lot happened from February 1872 and Allan ignored it because it was inconvenient.3 points

I'm not sure if any one bar celtic would've acted like before then. Or had reason to. That said, they've certainly used Milne and Thompson (Petrie, Mulraney, that guy at Raith Rovers) at times since. Reid and their board have totally changed the game since their arrival. Part of the reason celtic have had so much traction with their off-field stuff is mostly that no-one expects it. This is why Reid went there and ripped up merry hell. I still think Scottish football is in denial about half of it. Sectarian industry/compliance officer/state aid/the weight they pull across the media - it stems from and is driven from the same place. Most write it off as "oh, they wouldn't do that", the sad truth is they would and they do.3 points

I'm guilty of that from time to time. The BBC is such a vast and disparate organisation I think all criticism of it has to be in context. I refuse to allow the poor professionalism of a handful of BBC Scotland Sport producers cloud my enjoyment of From Our Own Correspondent, Last Night Of The Proms or CBeebies. They are unconnected and rightly so. Anyone who judges the entire BBC because of what comes out of some quarters of Pacific Quay is making a mistake in my opinion. I'm genuinely supportive of the BBC, I approve of how they are funded and the editorial independence that affords them. When they make mistakes, and they do, I think they should be criticised for it. We're in a strange period just now, one I think will be studied by future historians. The demise of the written press in much of the Western world has created a vacuum that's not been adequately filled in my view. There has never been a better time for politicians or powerful entities and individuals to to do harm, because there are few organisations powerful enough to bring them to book. When I was born there were two daily evening papers in Glasgow, as well as the plethora of morning ones. This ensured councillors were scrutinised, decisions reported, individuals held to account. Not today, The Evening Times now barely functions as a newspaper, the Herald isn't much better. Nobody is watching closely at the City Chambers. That's the case across towns and cities the length of the country. Bloggers and websites haven't filled this void adequately. Very little 'reporting' is actually done online, few can afford to put the resources and time required. That's not changing anytime soon either. Which is why I'm reluctant to criticise the BBC when they do some things right and very keen to point out when I feel they are falling below their remit. We currently need them more than ever. We need an independent, powerful, credible media, both locally and nationally. Our club was almost destroyed in full view of everyone. Sir David Murray's words were accepted without scrutiny by too many in the media for fear of falling out with him (his only dissenting voices were from Rangers supporters) and Craig Whyte was likewise allowed to buy our club without real media scrutiny. By the time he was scrutinised it was too late. I hold organisations like BBC Scotland partly responsible for what happened to Rangers. Not the dancing on our grave stuff, or the risible 'Men Who Sold The Jerseys' documentary, an abject lesson in bolting the stable door when the horse is already in the South of France, no I want to know why they weren't much more critical of SDM and why they weren't asking far more searching questions of Craig Whyte. I think we need a functioning BBC in our society, more than ever. An organisation that can afford to upset some powerful or wealthy people without being concerned their advertising revenue will be affected. I really wish our dispute with BBC Scotland could be resolved. On a basic level I want to hear the same coverage of my side that every other side gets. I'll not manage to see the start of the Villareal game, but I should be able to hear it, if only their was coverage. I think Pedro and Murty were lucky they didn't have to face interviews post match after a number of our home games last season. From our perspective though it might have helped focus a few minds on the ruinous road we were headed down. But on a different level I want someone in the media to scrutinise our club's directors. Ask them difficult questions, demand clarity, hold them to account. BBC Scotland Sport aren't doing that on any level. We should be demanding they do, and not just at our club either. So I'll defend and criticise the BBC simultaneously, whilst hoping that someone there realises the responsibility and opportunity they have, and does something about it.3 points

Aye. Welcome to modern Scotland. Banners about 'huns' and hanging effigies of Rangers fans is just a bit of 'craic' but don't you dare sing Hello Hello. For the record, neither bother me in the slightest but I'd like to see some consistency.2 points

It was the same year that Yahoo FC took advantage of a former player's death to postpone a game where they were seriously lacking in personal (and later on had nonsuch when another premium Yahoo player died ... nor did methinks Motherwell postpone their game (or were allowed to) ... when it was their player). That was the season when the SFA and SPL lost any sort of respect, the season where Archie MacPherson was in the BBC Scotland canteen during the EL final and was flabbergasted when the whole place went bananas as Zenit scored. Oh what would you give for some investigative journalism into these events, what went on at the SFA, SPL and BBC in the years thereafter and during admin. Maybe SG status will get someone to act ...2 points

Go outside the Scottish football bubble and nobody knows Thomson or any of the others,....only the ex-cabinet minister qualifies as "prominent" IMO. Having the ginger toilet brush as a PR consultant made him a decent shout for a joke appearence on Still Game,..then he may have reached a slightly more prominent standing2 points
-
I think it's fairly obvious......................."Prominent Chairman" = John Reid He was far and away the most prominent chairman amongst the likes of Thomson and Petrie. Only Reid would have thought a personal phonecall might carry enough weight to be acted upon. Is Reid small minded, yes. See his cheap shots at Rangers when attending the Celtic AGM.2 points

Listening to the interview, it sounds as if he is saying he refused the club who were asking him not to help us in anyway. ie. he stuck to the slight extension that was put in place. Of course that wasn't the type of extension that would have really helped us prepare properly for the European Final. I see it as what stuck in his throat was Celtic stooping to that level of small-minded and pathetic, to make that request of him.2 points

"And it so happened that I had already had a meeting with Lex Gold at the SPL because what we were willing to do was to extend the season because of the fixture pile-up that Rangers had and I was most disappointed when I got back to the office to receive this call to ask me not to help them in any way. "That really stuck in my throat." And why in the gods name did you not simply go on with your plan to extend the season? You may say that someone called you, but at the end of the day, it was you and your fellows to do what was right ... or wrong.2 points

Very much so, contract managemnt is a vital part of running a club. Generally, the football operation seems to be working well. Tav has been an excellent signing for us.1 point

Yeah, The Horse with No Name's spreadsheet has us playing Celtic on 11 August 1888 at the "first Celtic Park" with us winning 9-1. No other details, including players or scorers were known (I think that's what Bearger is trying to say but the formatting is screwed up).1 point

Thursday is effectively a 'free hit'. I'd go for the element of surprise, attack and go for a goal in the first 15 to 20 minutes. I can't see 90 minutes of parking the bus working against a team that has quality middle to front. Had we had Jack and Ejaria fit, I'd be much more confident of getting a result.1 point

What will be interesting to find out will be why a call made any difference, or what did. Celtic played 6 games in May 2003 compared to our 9 games in 2008. So there would have been no inconsistency in extending the season. It’s a crime that these men were made to play 9 games in 24 days (including 2 away European ties). An average of 2 and a half days rest for a whole month. Not to mention that only 3 of our last 16 games were at Ibrox. The no mercy stance was unforgivable.1 point

@Crimson Dynamo I couldn't find a 24/7 bus service between vienna and bratislava. Between midnight and 5-6 am there isn't going on anything. slovaklines.sk is the official bratislava airport bus service to vienna (and back). flixbus also has a lot of busses between the two cities (not all to the airport). train would be another option but it's more expensive and there's no train going to bratisava airport so you would need a bus there or taxi. Just got my confirmation for the match ticket in Glasgow. Looking massively forward1 point

One other thing that annoys me about this is that Peat is saying he never bowed to their demands. Maybe my memory is failing me but did we still not end up playing 5 games in 11 days or something? From memeory we got the square root of hee-haw help from the SFA.1 point

Personal John. Scotland is a small place. Need to leave it at that I’m afraid so won’t comment further. I also know 2 serious attempts were made at resolution from same person thru an ex director at the club but the problem now is what was a principled journalistic warning shot across the bow has been seized upon by lower order more visible people at BBC (the sort referred to in the podcast) who have had an agenda against Rangers pre EBT and post EBT and it has snowballed into something that I doubt Mackinnon can/will resolve. There is no shortage of folk there who quite frankly think we are ‘Orange barstewards’. My personal view is ‘Hell mend them’ but then I’m not a licence paying pensioner or digitally excluded person who only has the radio and council telly. Any resolution that is sought must insist not only on the BBC Trust ruling being respected but the BBC to show more fair minded journalism and to employ more fair minded pundits. The rot is set deep. We know who the haters are and we know they are being led. Only external resolution and a change in culture will fix this to any degree of normality and any concession from BBC Scotland will be superficial Put it this way , even when we get 55, unless peace is made the jibes from the low order pundits will not stop. They may intensify and the narrative from the likes of Miller , Gordon and Spence are only going to go along the lines of ‘they won this one without EBTs’, ‘is this Rangers first league title’, ‘look at Rangers budget’ , ‘where did they get the money’, ‘FFP’ etc. Without a major change they will continue to marginalise us in all the variety of ways that are well documented even down to childish stuff like the Morelos ‘offside’ goal at Killie. For example my guess is there is a lot of support in the BBC for the stance of Chairman Reid (and it must have been him) in wanting Rangers to be offered no assistance. Any other country and that would be much bigger news and the broadcaster would run at least one major show on the self harm in Scottish football and the lack of sportsmanship and interest in the development of our game. They would question the sporting integrity of that club from Japan tours to their attempt to influence officials to be prejudiced. Throw in the referees strike and it becomes a rancid putrid stew of sporting disintegrity involving Celtic. A club like no other that’s for sure. I haven’t looked at BBC sport today but I’ll guess the chairman of Celtic wanting to damage Rangers chances in Europe out of pure hatred does not get a mention of any real note. Imagine the roles were reversed. I don’t think they are capable of balance and that’s why I would rather they were open with their bias and hatred and shown up for what they are.1 point

Funnily enough I didn't think of Celtic when I heard of this story, my first suspicion was Dundee Utd and Thomson. The fact it could have been anyone of half a dozen tells it's own story. To be fair to Peat he was trying to assist the Scottish club in a European Final, like a normal football person would. Ironically if it's ever revealed who it was they'll probably lionised by their own support.1 point
