  1. Given the budget say Mourinho has at ManUtd,....surely his brand of honking football is less understandable and more deserving of criticism, especially at a club with such a reputation for a expansive and attacking play. Allardyce has cornered a niche market that pays extremely well and often allows for several free months a year. There won't be many born in 1954 that failed their Eleven Plus doing so well !!

  5. "just" a fan, Gonzo, but one who came to Scotland as a refugee specifically to be near The Rangers. Apparently he applied for 955 jobs, got one and .........well here is the story from the official site: AHMED Ismail saw his dreams come true when the club invited the lifelong fan from Sudan to Ibrox. He came to Glasgow in 2015 as a refugee and chose the city to settle because of his love of Rangers. Ahmed is a Glasgow Housing Association tenant from Lambhill and applied for 955 jobs after being granted leave to remain in the UK. It was only in July of 2017, through Wheatley Group’s Changing Lives programme, that he landed a full-time job with a GHA environmental team. It is through that job that Ahmed got his first chance to watch Rangers, and visit Ibrox in person, when his manager lent him his season ticket. To celebrate his story the club invited the 29-year-old to watch the home against Dundee last month. Here is Ahmed’s story: “I arrived in Glasgow in 2015 as a refugee from Sudan. I was in danger there. I was hurt and my family was hurt, so I had to leave. “At first it was difficult to understand people. There are a lot of slang words, and people speak very quickly, but I kept practicing. But Glasgow people are lovely – they helped me a lot. “When I was given leave to remain, I wanted to start working straightaway. I have always been a hard worker. I find it very hard to just sit around. “But I struggled to get a chance. Even though I have a lot of experience and qualifications, and work really hard, I couldn’t get an interview. “My housing officer told me about the Changing Lives programme. I just felt eager every day, and determined to make the most of the chance I was given. “After a few months, I was given a full-time job in the environmental team in Milton. I am outdoors a lot – and part of a great team “GHA hasn’t just changed my life, they’ve saved it. GHA has opened so many doors for me and shown me that a way out is possible. They have really helped me a lot. “I like working with my colleagues and I love the job. I am still so new here, and I don’t know what the future holds for me or what my ambitions are yet but GHA is a great organisation, and is very supportive of employees like me. “I miss my home, and I miss my people, obviously – but there are good people around me here too. They are so nice.” https://rangers.co.uk/news/headlines/ahmeds-gers-dream/

  7. Great player but please let’s try and make our money work for us by signing younger players on a permanent basis.

  8. Plus, Turkey have a bit of a reputation of over paying players, similar to China, but at nowhere near the same extent. You'll probably find that they're more than happy for Skrtel to leave to get him off the wage bill...

  9. Yes, regular CL participation is a gamechanger. Both in short-term revenue (UEFA and TV pyts/gates) and in the medium term (profile wrt resale value of player registrations/sponsership deals). The increasing financial disparities between clubs in most of the leagues means a natural continuation of this is a European Super League of sorts. Celtic are trying to lobby and position themselves to be knocking at such a door if it were to happen. We need to try and up our game considerably in an effort to improve our lot and thus bring them downwards. Or in other words, we need to start winning leagues and getting CL football as soon as possible.

  10. It meant that the club had more power, the registration of the player maintained it's value (obviously dependent on form/age). Clubs like Dundee Utd. who had probably the best youth set-up in Scotland at the time got fees/market value for their players and not compensation tribunals setting relatively low numbers (although there was some karma wrt Charlie Telfer move ). You mentioned Hibs, the Bosman ruling is probably going to cost them a couple of million on John McGinn.

  12. I think it was during the 80's when there was a significant rule change regards gate receipts that had a huge effect on this. Clubs would keep home gate receipts for league games instead of what they had done previously, ie. sharing them. Over a season this would give both us and them a significant revenue adavantage over the rest. It was also pre Bosman and clubs like Dundee Utd, who had an excellent football operation were able to take full advantage.

  13. A 2007 version of Walter would be perfect but given the benefit of our time machine, we could ask him to leave Ally McCoist with Sue Barker.

  14. Gerrard, Zidane and Whittaker in the same thread. That’s some exalted company he’s keeping.

  16. It’s not because he’s Israeli, it’s because he’s Jewish. You just have to compare the treatment of Biton and Kayal. Both Israeli, one Jewish and one Muslim. Which one got all the abuse and no abuse for the other?

  17. I was trying to be funny - I obviously don’t blame Whittaker. Our problems stemmed from the Big Tax case hanging over us. (Let’s not dig through the finer details again) I’m merely pointing out that the last time he played for us - he indirectly cost us roughly £20m of potential CL money.

  18. Rangers players should not support Celtic or be seen to support Celtic. Their fans are scum who want our club dead.

  19. We used to have more than our share of the same arrogance. There’s still some of it around. Six seasons being kicked around like outcasts has been a sobering lesson for many. Rather than see a return to success as a matter only of revenge, perhaps we might also pursue it with some much-needed humility.

  21. It means doing whatever you think is in the best interests of Rangers. You and I might disagree on what that is but I don't think the many fans who, on a point of principle, no longer go to away games are less of a supporter than you.
