For me, Gerrard or whoever it may be,..........has to build something, rather than try and collect a readymade team of veterens who breakdown for whatever reason. We should be ignoring the other half of the City for the next 12 months and be preparing to engage more seriously for the following season. That way, I think we'd have a better chance of stopping 10IAR. It wouldn't be an easy message to send but if Gerrard looks to build and lowers the immediate expectations, the support may just about manage to swallow it and who knows, we may get a pleasent surprise, probably with a few bumps along the way. Any new manager would be well advised not to mention celtic and gaps. Concentrate on improving Rangers. They shouldn't allow the media up here to drag him down to where they want a new manager to go. No cheap and easy platitudes about 55, high and immediate expectations. Hard and cold realism with a determination to improve and improve.4 points

Although he's a chartered accountant, he's never worked as an "accountant". After qualifying as a CA, he moved across to 3i, which is a private equity and venture capital company and continued in private equity, which isn't accounting. He was on the Rangers board initially to assist with bringing finance into the club. For various reasons, he didn't seem too successful at that but he should be applauded for his subsequent efforts in other areas (getting rid of the previous regime etc). I understand that he's got some personal issues at the moment, which may or may not be involved in this, but he's certainly a bear who has "lived the dream".3 points

Paul Murray doesn’t have much money (in football terms) but he does have strong investment management skills and as a result should have good contacts. He went round City of London a few years ago asking for cash but without much success. A mate of mine was asked but declined (good decision financially). It is unlikely he would be able to put significant personal cash into the club. He has put an awful lot of emotion goodwill and energy into the club and it has been an obsession for him. It would however be a strange time for him to choose to leave if we are in the brink of something exciting. I guess thats the question, ‘have they been asked to leave or chosen to leave?’ Good or bad I would agree it is a significant development particularly in Murray’s case as he’s blue through and through and lives for the club.3 points

Fair points and, as I said in this week's pod, it's the last paragraph Rangers supporters have to be most concious of. With expected squad changes it's very unlikely Rangers will win the league again next year. Can we accept that?3 points

Sort of. I'm not trying to be obtuse and yes I know you said 'the season'. The context of where you are saying this is important as you are saying it in a thread relating to the board and the resignation of two board members which implies further consideration. Since this board took over I personally think the Club has been run with a specific remit and to all intents and purposes, with the resolution of Mike Ashleys direct/indirect involvement, a hangover from the previous board I might add, this board has succeeded in that regard. Their first decision was Stuart McCall, then Warburton and in spite of how that ended Warburton achieved what he was brought in to do, which was promotion from the Championship. I agree that the next managerial decision was a gamble and turned out to be a poor one in Pedro but in that case hindsight is always 20/20. Murty for me was always a stop gap for them while they worked within the constraints they placed upon themselves. The structure, and I'm being as honest as any other Rangers fan can outside looking in, of how the Club is run looks far better than I would have imagined it would be at this stage in the project. Of course it looks poor from a playing perspective to Rangers fans. However from a business perspective looking at it objectively they've been fairly successful. So the upshot is that I don't think the Club is being run poorly. I don't however think that the public relations operation has been particularly successful which has allowed enough room for the hostile SMSM to turn any and indeed all information coming from the Club into their stock and trade Soap Opera type plot lines damaging the Rangers brand which has always in truth been their remit. In my opinion, and with the SMSM cards stacked heavily against anything even slightly positive with regards to Rangers, the board need to have a visible presence across independent media and message boards simply to disseminate relevant and important information quicker and to the people who will better use it and pass it to the fans. This latest situation may well be just making way for new investors to take their place on the board however I'm puzzled as to why it has been announced without the new investors being in place... are we not going to like who that might be or is there some other reason like many have suggested in this thread already?2 points

The thing is that they (the English media) aren't any good either, in fact, they are so dim that you wonder wtf is going on in the world ...but, but, but - they actually enjoy football. They want to talk about football things and so to them, it's, naturally, a big story. In their blessed innocence, they don't have a flying clue what it all means to the obsessed in "Free Royston". The contrasting coverage is yet another startlingly clear indicator of how f@cked up Scottish football is, I'm afraid, and this is an issue far deeper than Mr Steven Gerrard. It's totally f@cked and I don't see it ever recovering. The amount of utter, ill-founded pish that swirls around is heartbreaking (Israel-Palestine, ffs, by folk who couldn't point to them on a map)2 points

Steven Gerrard Steven Clifford Uncategorized May 2, 2018 3 Minutes I have long since blogged that Rangers are in a good place off the pitch and heading towards better times. Belittled recently somewhat by the actions of some players and somewhat ridiculous statements from the board, I have had reason to question those beliefs. After all, I have blogged this board would deliver a big name manager and were determined to drag this club back to where we belong. We know now that Steven Gerrard IS that big name and he is the chosen man to return Rangers back to a much healthier place. As the man himself said last night on BT Sports ‘It’s true, I’ve held positive talks with Rangers and the plan is to pick them up again on Thursday’ Steven Gerrard isn’t coming up to Glasgow to put his reputation on the line with his hands tied behind his back. This board have promised & proven significant funds are available for the summer transfer window. This won’t be just for a ‘few loans’ or freebies. Rangers require significant surgery and Gerrard, along with Mark Allen, will be pushing for that. If we ignore the many rumours that this deal is done with an announcement expected at the end of the week, we must hope the board can get this one over the line. Another managerial high profile failure would be disastrous for this board. It is noticeable the difference in media reporting for this deal in England and Scotland. The negativity in Scotland as predictable as ever, the useless idiots and ex opposition players lining up to have a pop at the club. It is somewhat interesting when SNP attention seekers join in to have a go and ridicule the prospect, perhaps if they concentrated on their own jobs in parliament this country wouldn’t be in such a mess. Where as down south the excitement is tangible and reaction polar opposite. Gary Lineker, Dennis Wise, Alan Shearer and Ian Wright all talking about how exciting the possibility is for Steven Gerrard. Anyone who watched BT Sport last night could see that Lineker himself was practically bursting at the possibility. Sky Sports have been full of praise for the club and speak in glowing terms of our institution, a tremendous challenge with a sleeping giant they describe it as. That’s the reality and obvious reaction, the idiots up here who championed ‘Ronny Roar’ and Ian Cathro, are now showing their blindingly obvious bias saying the exact opposite now. When you ask yourself why this is the answer is blindingly obvious. Graeme Souness was bang on all those years ago, the jealousy towards our club will never fade. Rangers have given theirselves a chance of worldwide exposure and they don’t like it, they wanted our club trampled to the floor and any signs of recovery they will rush to trample. All anyone wants to talk about is Rangers. Steven Gerrard is a huge name in world football, if the club do pull this off the potential is absolutely massive. The interest in our club will be huge and players will be interested in playing for one of the best midfielders Great Britain has ever produced. Gerrard himself is a managerial risk but there is no obvious answer to this solution at present. There is no Walter Smith waiting in the wings so yes the club have rolled the dice, but any appointment is a risk so why not make it an exciting one. We know Gerrard is a winner, we know he will have a point to prove and we know he won’t accept second best. The fact he wasn’t put off by the recent horror shows on the park show he has the character we absolutely need. The negatives are obvious and like anyone who might get the job, everyone is a risk. Early indications are that better players are on the way, Scott Arfield and Allan McGregor the early rumoured signings. The pursuit of James McArthur now looks to be unlikely, with the Midfielder wishing to stay in England, but again shows where Rangers want to be. The names linked with Rangers IF Gerrard arrives will only get bigger and better. There is absolutely no doubt that Rangers need huge surgery on the pitch with a playing squad way short of the required standard. There is nobody at Ibrox thinking otherwise, the summer window will be huge in player turnover both in and out of the club. Any clubs interested in any of our players will not find Rangers too difficult to deal with. So all eyes will be on Rangers in the run in to this weekend. Steven Gerrard is the chosen one and we now wait for formal confirmation. Personally I think it’s an exciting possibility and obviously a tremendous risk. In the coming days we will find out exactly how it will all unfold. Will the club get this one over the line? Until then with regards to the negativity of this country towards this deal and our club, I will close in the perfect way Ignore the nonsense, the irrelevant and the noise2 points

Actually Rangers and Liverpool supporters have been more connected than the tims the last few years. http://www.himg.co.uk/ i have said for a while they have been stealing songs off us through the years and I still believe they were the original Huns so with the coming of Gerrard it is time to steal, Walk On, off them. That would be better than operation Tango.2 points

Whoever comes in needs to be someone who has enough savvy to quickly weigh up that side of it and box clever. Don't get taken down rabbit holes or give them ammunition they crave to use at a later date. - Keep it simple and keep it about Rangers. - Show ambition but don't create unreasonable expectation. - Don't be confrontational unless it knocks at your door...and if it does, think before you speak (or re. the club, churn out a statement) I don't think our PR team as it is or for example, our chairman (for his own numerous OGs) are particularly good sources of advice.2 points

What is very clear since SG has been linked with us is that the whole of the Scottish gutter press seem to be in a state of panic! every article in the Scottish press is a negative one, compare them to the English press and highly rated pundits/ex players like Ian Wright/Shearer/Lineker etc who all seem to think it is a great move for him and Scottish football, you would think they are a tad worried/scared?.2 points

How can we not? It's so unlikely that to not accept it would not be being supporters, but some other word. I know Souness won it in his first year but he was, I believe, as surprised by that as the rest of us, and he had a far better scenario than we now are facing. As we all know, it all went wrong the year after, showing how difficult accomplishing a revolution really is. I desperately want us to stop their tainted ten in a row bid, but I even more desperately want our club to become Rangers again and all that once meant before I head into total dotage and shuffle off this mortal coil. I'm more than prepared to be patient if progress is being made. What gets on my tits is that, thus far, we've exacerbated the crimes committed upon us by floundering about and making wrong choices and bad decisions for the last six years and have never had a clear plan for how we are to get back to where we belong. that worried, and still worries, the f@ck out of me.2 points

Totally agree. "When speaking to BT Sport last April, Gerrard wasn’t shy about revealing the way he wanted his teams to play: “My teams will be physical. Fighting, winning, tackling. Going where it hurts, letting your lungs burn and really digging deep.”" Have to say I really like the sound of Gerrard's style. I know it doesn't mean much without a track record, but I for one will be glad to have a manager who values strength, aggression and tackling for a change. We barely have a midfielder who can tackle. Our centre backs are weak pushovers. Here's hoping Stevie will fix those problems in the transfer market.2 points

1. Lewis Budinackas is an U16, with both U17 keeper's injured Lewis has been the 17's keeper since christmas. 2. Nathan Patterson, has captained Scotland's 17's. Nathan was small coming up through the ages, really took a big stretch in last six months. 3. Zac Butterworth was signed from Alloa Atletic at Under 13, alternated between full back and winger 4. Ben Williamson a bit of an unsung hero, likes a tackle, struggled to start games at younger age groups now on a pro contract. Not hand any international recognition. 5. Danny Finlayson only dropped back to 17's a few months ago, had been playing at 20's. Changed his allegiance to Northern Ireland. 6. Kyle McLelland U16 centre back and another who has opted for Northern Ireland. 7. Josh McPake signed from Hibs for a develpment fee at U14. Skilfull player who can be frustrating, would be a special player if he released the ball at the right time. 8 Murray Miller an U16 player signed form Motherwell for a development fee, picks up the loos balls and rarely gives possession away, keeps midfield ticking over. 9 Dapo Mebude can be unplayable or on occasions his head is elsewhere, usually the first 15 minutes will tell which Dapo has turned up. 10 Ciaran Dickson another U16 ,real high energy box to box midfielder 11. Kai Kennedy the real playmaker of the team, not the biggest but really skilful and talented, at the moment the only one not commited to a contract. 12. Harris O'Connor cultured defender and another U16, Signed from Kilmarnock for a small development fee at U15 he was a year at Kilmarnock after his family moved north was previously on Charlton Athletic's books. 17 James Maxwell picked up this season when Falkirk/Forth Valley scrapped their youth setup. a decision will be made at the end of the season. 18 Matty Yates U16 striker who has played quite a few 17's games and scored a few goals/.2 points

Non Exec Directors are not on a board to make managerial decisions they are there to offer independent oversight and in some rare cases constructive criticism and/or objectivity in executive decisions... i.e. “should bring an independent judgement to bear on issues of strategy, performance and resources including key appointments and standards of conduct”. In other words they are there to offer the board insight in aspects of their skill set or in their field of expertise. However NEDs are subject to the codified duties of directors contained in the Companies Act 2006 in the same way as executive directors. Of course I could be reading more into it than is actually there but what I find the most puzzling is that they have resigned without replacement or co-option of two new NEDs although that may happen in the next few days or more. The reason why I'm bringing this up is because the UK Corporate Governance Code advises that the balance of executive and non-executive directors should be such that no individual or small group of individuals can dominate the board's decision-making. Non-executive directors should comprise not less than half the board.1 point

I think it would be a massive GIRUY to them, they won't be able to handle us being back on top and that would just kill them off.1 point

We have made some reasonable acquisitions and overall the team has been improved (though if you look at our subs bench we lack strength in depth). However, I am not sure we are much in front of Aberdeen or Hibs. Taking the latter, is our midfield stronger than that of Hibs with Allan, McGeouch and McGinn; I think that is debatable. Our central defence is weak and Hibs signed McGregor (from us) and I would suggest that he is at least as good as any of our present central pairing. I don't know the other Hibs players well enough to do a player by player comparison but I would suggest that others, such as, Gray or Boyle are reasonable players. A better manager could have got more out of the players, especially against Celtic, but I think we still need to improve the calibre of the players we have to make a sustained challenge against Celtic.1 point

I'm not blowing a trumpet for Murty in any fashion. And I didn't 'hand pick' games I looked at a run of consecutive matches which involved almost the entire league. My interest in those games is it was a good run of consecutive matches which demonstrated that even the current squad should be capable of a minimum runaway second place and running the title close. That's encouraging since it might suggest that if Gerrard actually is being given significant funds he doesn't have to spread it thinly so to speak with a wholesale gutting of the squad. Just a few high quality players may do the trick if he can get this current batch who clearly can do the job when they're up for it playing. And as was intimated in another post if not for that run we would likely be out of contention for any Euro spot far less second place.1 point

I think this would be brilliant on many levels, Not least that we would sing it far better than them ...or Liverpool....over 45,000 (of bears only, I mean - nearly the whole ground sang it) of us proved that at Wembley in 77 (yes, only time in my life I have sung it, yes there were one or two bears complaining but nearly all around me were singing it (and all were bears) after a brief "WTF!???!! but, yes, best of all the hitherto hidden tims were revealed by their utter bewilderment, not that there were many of them.1 point

And, interestingly enough, Wright played for Celtic - yet he couldn't be more positive about Gerrard taking the job. See, the difference in the English sports media is that they are, for the most part, objective and unbiased.1 point

I won't miss Paul Murray any more than the other Murrays we've endured over the years. I knew Paul during his 3i days and I can think of few people I'd less like to be running a business. Player quality when it is at the level of Gerrard can indirectly have an effect when going into management. 1. the attention/profile it brings which can be converted into revenue. 2. the automatic respect that comes when the guy in front of you has reached the levels he has and the opportunity to drag our level of professionalism up, eg. fitness levels 3. the profile of the player who would consider joining Rangers. 4. the 'revolutionary aspect' that galvanises a support and ensures ST take-up. 5. the level of supporting staff should be better It provides a base from which Gerrard would then have to show he's up to it. If he is appointed, gets the backing (staff and finance) then he has every chance of improving things in the short-term and winning the league title in the medium term. I heard a 3 year contract mentioned. Whether there is anything in that or not, I don't know but I'd sign-up now, for him to win the League Championship in his last year.1 point

Frankie, I think that you are actually mis-interpreting the conversation. pete wasn't talking about managers having played at a high level, he was talking about Directors of Football, at least that is how I take it given Overmars is DoF at Ajax. There is a very real difference between being manager and DoF.1 point
